Mobile Internet Offload Gateway for 3G.

Nokia Siemens Networks

Role

Module Leader

Synopsis

Broadband wireless networks are approaching saturation due to an explosion of traffic spurred by smart phones and wireless dongles. If not addressed, congestion leads to poor quality of experience and ultimately customer churn. However, adding capacity to the wireless core network is a significant investment and thus operators are looking at novel approaches to deliver more capacity more cost effectively. Appropriate solutions can empower network equipment providers to incorporate Internet Offload / Traffic Offload Gateway functionality to provide congestion relief for the wireless core network. By identifying and routing certain classes of traffic directly to the Internet rather than via the wireless core network, operators can increase customer satisfaction and delay costly core capacity upgrades. An Internet Offload / Traffic Offload Gateway are flexible in its deployment options and are applicable to both LTE and 3G wireless networks.

Responsibilities

Managed Design and Development using NAS (GMM, SM) and GTP Protocols.

Synopsis

2G/3G roaming control enhancements is a new requirement for 3G MSC to control whether the whole 2G subscribers (not individual 2G subscribers) are allowed to roam into 3G networks or not when 2G/3G network has the same PLMNIID. So a system level feature flag is needed in 3G MSC to indicate whether all 2G subscribers are allowed to roam into the 3G network or not. When a 2G subscriber accesses the 3G networks via UTRAN, 3G MSC gets triplets from HLR. According to the UTRAN access and triplets got from HLR, we know that 2G subscriber roams into 3G network and our 3G MSC will based on the system flag to decide to reject the 2G subscribers or not. If the flag is switched on, 2G users can’t roam into 3G networks. If the flag is switched off (default value), 2G users can roam into 3G networks. 2G networks imply the network with an MSC that supports the GSM radio access technology. The 3G networks imply network with an MSC that supports UTRAN and GERAN Access networks and 2G/3G network supports all three.

Responsibilities

Coding/Bug fixing and testing of 2G/3G Roaming Control Enhancements feature according to NAS (MM) 3GPP TS 24.008 Protocol.
